Trail #1981 follows the creek valley through woods and meadows to three crossings before the hot-springs area. The return retraces the same route; campsite access varies by the exact number reserved.

From Conundrum Creek Trailhead, Trail #1981 generally parallels the creek through forest and meadow. The current Forest Service overview identifies three crossings before the springs; an archived route sheet supplies the approximate mileage and gain, but its old crossing methods and operating rules are not current instructions.

Near the destination, official access paths branch among twenty numbered campsites. This itinerary includes every site that can accommodate the saved party: all twenty for a party of one or two, eleven for a party of three or four, and Sites 17 and 18 for a party of five or six. Camp at the exact site reserved, visit the springs without treating them as an open camping area, then retrace the creek route to the same trailhead.

Conundrum uses designated numbered campsites under the Maroon Bells–Snowmass overnight permit. Confirm the current permit, map, conditions, and alerts before departure.

Reserve the exact campsite
Conundrum is not a dispersed-zone reservation. The permit holder and group must camp at the numbered site they reserve.
One watch area, party-aware candidates
This watch automatically covers every designated campsite that can accommodate the saved party, as distinct physical permit options.
This watch supports up to six people
A party of one or two includes all twenty designated campsites; a party of three or four excludes the nine capacity-two sites; a party of five or six can watch Sites 17 and 18. Larger legal groups may need multiple campsite reservations and are outside this fixed watch.
Capacity determines eligibility
A campsite is included only when its official capacity fits the saved party, including the six-person capacity at Sites 17 and 18.
Recreation.gov issues the permit
Ranger stations do not issue it. Wild Chime reports qualifying openings and never books, buys, or holds a campsite.
Standing site rules
Dogs are prohibited in the Conundrum Hot Springs Zone, and campfires are prohibited at the designated campsites. Recheck current temporary restrictions.
Canceled inventory returns
Recreation.gov says canceled permits become available within 24 hours without promising an immediate return at a predictable minute.
