RMNP backpacking permits are campsite-by-campsite plans.

Choose the named designated campsite for every night, pay the current reservation and wilderness fees, then collect the physical permit and dashboard tag in person.

The permit must be collected in person under the current NPS process.

Build the itinerary

Every overnight date needs its named campsite.

An RMNP permit is more specific than a broad backcountry area reservation.

One-night trip

Match the one campsite to the start date.

The Longs Peak trip, for example, needs an eligible Boulder Field reservation for the saved party on Night 1.

Moving itinerary

Keep each campsite in trail order.

Tonahutu–North Inlet needs Granite Falls first and North Inlet Junction second. Reversing the dates is a different permit plan.

Basecamp itinerary

Repeat the site when the trip stays put.

Glacier Gorge uses the same designated campsite on two consecutive nights; the visit to The Loch does not add a campsite.

2027 planning

The standing annual release rule is confirmed; season details can still change.

The official Recreation.gov listing explicitly says the advance window opens every year on March 1 at 8:00 a.m. Mountain Time.

That standing rule supports a March 1, 2027 at 8:00 a.m. Mountain Time planning date. It is not an inference from a one-off 2026 notice. The park has not separately announced all 2027 season inventory details as of August 24, 2026.

The current price is $36: a $6 nonrefundable reservation fee and a $30 wilderness administrative fee. Treat those as current fees and verify them before the 2027 release.

Availability can return after cancellations, but neither Recreation.gov nor Wild Chime guarantees that a complete multi-night sequence will appear.

Before the trailhead

Online checkout is not the final permit step.

The current park process requires in-person pickup of the physical permit and vehicle dashboard tag.

The NPS says permits may be picked up up to 30 days before the trip. Recheck the current Wilderness Office location and hours rather than relying on a saved screenshot or old itinerary.

Carry the permit and follow the named campsite sequence. A Wild Chime opening alert does not complete checkout or pickup.

Entrance and timed entry

The wilderness permit replaces timed entry, not the entrance fee.

Park entry and corridor access are related but distinct checks.

Timed entry

The overnight permit serves as the reservation.

Under the current NPS rule, a wilderness overnight permit is accepted as the timed-entry reservation for the permitted trip.

Entrance

A pass or entrance fee is still required.

The wilderness permit does not waive the park entrance charge. Bring the applicable park pass or pay the fee.

Route portal

Check the named trailhead or road.

Bear Lake Road, Wild Basin, Longs Peak, and west-side portals have different current conditions and arrival constraints.

When do 2027 RMNP backpacking permits open?

Can I camp anywhere near the named RMNP campsite?

No. The supported permits are for named designated campsites. Follow the site on the permit for each night rather than treating it as a dispersed zone.

Can I print the final permit at home?

The current NPS process requires in-person pickup of the physical permit and dashboard tag. Recheck the Wilderness Office instructions before the trip.

Do I need a timed-entry reservation too?

The wilderness overnight permit currently serves as timed-entry permission for the permitted trip, but a park entrance pass or fee is still required.
